Nicole Hockenberry, a NEF Scholarship winner, decided upon her chosen career path in high school. After graduating from a local community college she went on to earn her BSN degree in nursing from Colorado State University in Pueblo, Colorado. While working in the Swedish Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she found that her nursing passion truly lies with neonates. She is now enrolled at Regis University in Denver planning to become a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP). She’s participated in two international Project C.U.R.E. (Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment) medical missions to India and Belize and, in August, 2014 headed to the Congo. Her future goals are to instruct birth attendants worldwide in the “Helping Babies Breathe” techniques and working to strengthen the practice of “Family Centered Care” as a neonatal nurse practitioner in Denver.
