The M. Elizabeth Carnegie African American Memorial Scholarship recipient, obtained her BSN from Purdue University and MSN from the University of Cincinnati. Arica has worked in both the public and private sectors of nursing for companies such as Baptist Healthcare System, Clarian Health, the Marion County Health Department, and Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals. In addition to her nursing education, Ms. Brandford-Dixon received her Juris Doctorate in 2006 from Texas Southern University. Arica is a licensed attorney with a primary focus in medical malpractice and public interest law. As an attorney, Arica’s primary mission was to help solve legal and social problems facing the urban community through scholarship and advocacy. In 2009, Ms. Brandford-Dixon returned to her first love and passion, nursing. For the past four years Arica has been working in nursing education teaching in associate, baccalaureate, and master degree nursing programs. Currently, Arica is a full-time doctoral student at the University of Kentucky. She is the Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar for the state of Kentucky as well as an Occupational and Environmental Health Fellow for the University of Kentucky. Ms. Brandford-Dixon’s research interests include vulnerable populations, health disparities and nursing workforce issues. The research intensive PhD program at the University of Kentucky is transforming Ms. Brandford-Dixon into a nurse scientist, educator and leader in global nursing.
