Pursuing her doctoral degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Ashley Henneghan, winner of the Evelyn Barclay Scholarship, intends to become a nurse educator with a tenured position in the school of nursing to help educate more nurses to meet the national nursing shortage. She has witnessed first hand the number of eligible nursing students who are turned away from the University of Texas because of a short supply of instructors. Her bachelor’s nursing program at Pennsylvania State University laid the foundation for her career goals and helped prepare her for the full scope of nursing practice: patient care, leadership, and research. Throughout her studies she has been working as a teaching assistant in nursing. She is currently a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association, the Holistic Nurses Association, and the Oncology Nursing Society.
