Cara Harris


Cara Harris is the recipient of the Freedmen’s Hospital Nurses’ Alumni Clubs, Inc. Estelle Massey Osborne Scholarship through the Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. (NEF).

Ms Harris is an Adult Nurse Practitioner with 24 years of service at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She is an Ohio State University College of Nursing alumnus who completed her BSN in 1992 and her MSN NP in 1998.

Cara credits her mother as providing her with the best role model of a professional nurse; her mother inspired her to pursue her nursing career.

Ms Harris has worked in a variety of roles: unit based outpatient and community health care but currently she works on an inpatient unit with the Division of Endocrinology at the Medical Centers community hospital location. Cara is a Certified Diabetes Educator and focuses on the care of patients with Diabetes. Her career objective is to continue clinical practice and obtain her Doctor of Nursing Practice DNP degree. She knows that a DNP degree will provide advanced knowledge in areas such as evidence based practice, outcome management, policy, population health informatics, leadership and collaboration. This innovative degree will allow her to continue to work clinically with patients at the bedside and help move evidence into practice.

Her specific area of interest will be looking at hypoglycemia in the inpatient setting. She plans to continue to be involved in a variety of community related activities, projects and events. Many of these activities relate to heart disease, diabetes and healthy lifestyles. Her involvement in these activities will continue to increase her awareness of current health issues and methods of prevention that can impact self-care and improve patient outcomes. She looks forward to continuing to work with students, mentoring, and staying active in professional organizations. It is her goal to complete her doctoral education to obtain increased advanced nursing care knowledge to positively impact healthcare on both a systems and local community level.
