Debra Miller

Debra Miller has been awarded the Barbara L. Tate Scholarship. While always working in the medical field, it was a dream of hers to become a nurse, however, her family always came first. Ms Miller raised five children before returning to finish her degree in nursing. When she did return to school her youngest child was in kindergarten and she had the full support of her children and husband. She received an associate degree in nursing at Delaware Technical Community College in 2006 and then, went back to school and received her bachelor degree at Wilmington University in 2010. Currently Debra is attending Drexel University and plans to graduate in May of 2019 with a master’s degree as a Clinical Nurse Leader.

Since 1999 Debra has been working at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children on the same unit. She began her healthcare career as an aide prior to graduating as a registered nurse. Five years later, she was the Assistant Nurse Manager and considers her co-workers an amazing team. She is currently a Certified Pediatric Nurse. Working with children is her passion and that is where she plans to stay! Her current position at Nemours allows her to be at the bedside and to perform administrative duties. It is the best of both worlds and it fulfills her to be working at the bedside, caring for children and to be an advocate for her nurse colleagues.

Community service is another special passion for Debra and she has gone on several mission trips. She organized her health care team at the hospital to serve monthly at a local community homeless shelter. This is a special time for all involved as they prepare dinners and actually serve the people each month. It is a wonderful team building experience and allows everyone on her unit to participate.

Debra’s goals are to continue to serve the community in which she lives, as well as remain at the bedside and advocate for her patients and families and the nurses with whom she serves. She considers herself very honored to receive the Barbara L. Tate Scholarship.
