Jenna Magallanes BSN, RN is the recipient of the Barbara L. Tate Scholarship. Jenna is a DNP student at the University of Michigan and recently completed her studies for Nurse Midwifery. As a non-traditional student, Jenna began her career in 2012 as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and obtained her ADN from Southwestern College in 2013. She then went back to school and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a specialty in Maternal-Child Health, from California State University, Long Beach in 2015. Since 2013, she has worked in multiple level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Units and the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, CA.

Currently, she serves as a board member for the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. Jenna is also a student member of the Metro Detroit Midwives of Color, American College of Nurse-Midwives and serves on the division of research-workforce committee through ACNM. With the support from Dr. Lisa Kane-Low, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, Associate Dean for Practice and Professional Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan, she will be working to implement her clinically focused DNP project in downtown Detroit focusing on making system changes aimed at reducing the incidence of primary Cesarean births in the United States, which have reached alarming rates without associated improvements in health outcomes for mothers and babies.

She plans to work as a nursing education faculty member upon graduation and like Dr. Tate, Jenna is motivated to promote the advancement of nursing and nursing education. She was recently recognized as a 2018-2020 Johnson & Johnson Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar and by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. As Jenna begins her career as an advanced practice registered nurse, she dreams of working as an educator and program developer. By committing to become a member of the nursing faculty of a university upon graduation she is dedicated to recruiting, mentoring, and increasing underrepresented minorities in nursing. She considers herself very honored to receive the Barbara L. Tate Scholarship.
