Kattiria Gonzalez

Kattiria M Rosario Gonzalez is the recipient of the 2018 Judith G. Whitaker Scholarship. She is currently a PhD student at SUNY Binghamton University, Decker School of Nursing, in Binghamton, NY. Kattiria received her AAS in Nursing from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, Syracuse NY, her BS in Nursing from Le Moyne College, Syracuse, NY, and her MS in Nursing Education from Le Moyne College, Syracuse, NY. Throughout her nursing career, she has worked in the acute care setting and currently works as the Clinical Coordinator/Instructor for the Department of Nursing at Le Moyne College. She has also served as a clinical instructor for St. Joseph’s College of Nursing.

During her time at Le Moyne College, Kattiria was an assistant in the research and participated on the Strategic Advisory Committee for the Academic Progression in Nursing (APIN) Grant sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She has organized four short-term study abroad trips for nursing students and has lead two of the trips. Destinations have included Belize City, Belize; Azua, Dominican Republic; and Ghana, Africa. Kattiria is also part of the Health and Safety Team for Honor Flight Syracuse, which honors veterans by flying them to Washington DC to visit their memorials. Lastly, through her Le Moyne College education and work experience, she was provided the opportunity to be a contributor for two texts on education: Nurse as Educator 6th ed and Essentials of Patient Education 2nd ed.

The PhD program that Kattiria attends focuses on rural and vulnerable populations, which hold a special place in her heart related to her work with study abroad. Because of the support from the faculty at the Decker School of Nursing, Kattiria has been able to publish two articles: Trust: A concept analysis with Watson’s theoretical perspective and A systematic review of the health of vulnerable populations within US rural societies, where she is first author. Her plan for dissertation research is related to trust and nursing student short-term study abroad from the perspective of the host community. Her goal is be able to positively impact these rural and vulnerable populations through the efficient education of nursing students.

Kattiria belongs to a number of professional nursing organizations and boards including Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Central New York Nurses Association (CNYNA), Central New York Nurses Collaborative to Advance Research and Evidence-Based Practice (CNY-NCARE), and Future of Nursing NYS Action Coalition. She is student member of American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and a board member of I-View Psychiatric NP Behavioral Therapy PC and I-Mobile Mental Health Services LLC.
